Understanding How You or Your Child Learns & Thrives

Every child is wired uniquely.

At OBP Psychology, we offer psychoeducational assessments in Cochrane, Airdrie, and Calgary that explore your child’s cognitive, academic, emotional, and behavioural profile to identify strengths, uncover challenges, and provide clear, actionable support.

Whether you're wondering about ADHD, learning disabilities, dyslexia, or emotional and behavioural regulation, assessments help guide next steps at home, at school, and beyond.

What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?

Psychoeducational assessments help answer questions like:

Why is school so hard for my child?

Why does my child’s effort not match their outcomes?

Is something being missed in how they’re supported at school?

Our Therapists' goal isn’t to “label." It’s to provide insight, clarity, and direction that validates your concerns and equips you and your child with knowledge and tools to move forward with confidence.

What we Assess

Psychoeducational Assessments

We explore a child's learning and thinking profile to better understand how they take in and work with information.

Areas we assess may include:

  • Cognitive abilities (like memory, attention, and reasoning)

  • Academic skills (reading, writing, and math)

  • Executive functioning (organization, planning, mental flexibility)

  • Attention and ADHD concerns

  • Learning disabilities (including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia)

  • Recommendations for learning supports and accommodations

  • Guidance for navigating Alberta’s education system

Emotional & Mental Health Assessments

These assessments help us understand how emotional, behavioural, and mental health factors may be impacting a child or teen.

We may look at:

  • Anxiety, depression, and trauma (e.g., PTSD)

  • Adjustment challenges and stress responses

  • Self-esteem and identity development

  • Emotional regulation and coping skills

  • Social and interpersonal functioning

  • Behavioural concerns

  • How mental health interacts with learning, attention, and executive functioning

We also provide learning recommendations, accommodations, and advocacy guidance based on Alberta's education system.

The Assessment Process

Our process is thorough, compassionate, and tailored to your child:

  1. Parent Intake & Consent Session (1–2 hours)
We meet with caregivers to discuss your child’s history and understand your concerns. We also go over consent and logistics.

  2. Testing with Your Child (3–8 hours, may occur over multiple sessions)
We work one-on-one with your child using evidence-based tools in a calm, engaging environment.

  3. Rating Scales & Interviews
Parents, teachers (with consent), and caregivers may complete standardized forms. We may also contact teachers to better understand your child’s school context.

  4. Scoring & Report Writing
We integrate all results into a comprehensive report.

  5. Feedback Session (1–2 hours)
You’ll receive a detailed report and a collaborative debrief that includes next steps, accommodation recommendations, and referrals if needed.
