Why We Do What We Do: The Values Behind Off the Beaten Path Psychology

If you have ever looked at a therapy practice and thought, "okay, but what are these people actually about?" Websites can tell you a lot of things. They can list credentials and modalities and use words like "holistic" and "client-centred" until the words blur together. What they don't always do is tell you what a practice genuinely cares about. So let's do that.

This post is about the values that drive Off the Beaten Path Psychology and Wellness, not just the ones on our new About Us page (though yes, those too), but the ones that show up in how we answer the phone, how we handle a tough session, and what we talk about when consider our choice of playlist in the Airdrie office. Spoiler: we love our music.

We Believe You Are the Expert on Your Own Life

Kristy

This one shapes everything. Our job is not to tell you who to be, what to want, or which path is the right one. Our job is to walk alongside you, bring the expertise we've spent years building, and help you access what you already know about yourself.

Autonomy matters here. That word gets used a lot in psychology, but we mean it practically: if you want to work with a different therapist within our practice because the fit isn't right, we support that fully. Your fit matters more than anyone's ego. We would rather you find the right person than stay with the wrong one out of politeness. (We're Canadian, so yes, we understand how hard that can be. But we give you explicit permission to switch.)

Ethical Practice Is Not an Afterthought

All of our psychologists are registered with the College of Alberta Psychologists and operate under the Health Professions Act. That is a regulatory requirement, yes. But it is also something we take genuine pride in.

Regulation means accountability. It means there is a professional body that holds us to a standard of care, and it means when you sit down with one of our team members, you can trust that the person across from you has met rigorous training requirements and is subject to ongoing oversight. In a landscape where "therapist" can mean many things, that matters.

OBP also has an EMDRIA-approved EMDR Consultant on staff, which supports our team's practice and training in one of the most well-researched trauma therapies available. We're committed to the evidence base, not because we have to be, but because our clients deserve nothing less.

Therapy only works when you feel genuinely free to direct your own journey. Our role is to walk alongside you and create the conditions for growth, not to tell you who to be.

We Are a Team That Loves Learning

OBP team

The research evolves. Neuroscience evolves. Our understanding of trauma, attachment, and how people heal keeps getting richer and more nuanced. We think it's our responsibility to evolve with it.

Our team consults together regularly. We challenge each other's thinking in a collegial way: the kind of way that makes us better without anyone feeling defensive. We bring continuing education back to the group. We disagree sometimes, which is healthy. A team that agrees on everything isn't thinking hard enough.

This commitment to growth isn't just about keeping credentials current. It is about showing up better for the people who trust us with the hard stuff.

Therapy Should Feel Human and So Should We

We are warm, boundaried, honest, and always working to earn your trust. We are not a faceless clinic. We are a group of registered psychologists who genuinely like each other, show up for our clients, and take the work seriously without taking ourselves too seriously.

Our three locations reflect this. Our Airdrie office at Nauton House is a heritage building in downtown Airdrie -- cozy, character-filled, and the kind of space that says "you can exhale here" the moment you walk in. Our Calgary office at 3130 114 Avenue SE is a modern, accessible space. Our Cochrane office at 100 Grande Blvd W carries that mountain town ease that anyone who has driven that highway on a clear day knows exactly what we mean.

We also offer telehealth and Walk and Talk Therapy for those who find their nervous system settles more easily when there's a trail and some fresh Alberta air involved. Because sometimes the couch is not the right fit, and that is perfectly okay.

We Care About More Than What Happens in the Therapy Room

OBP Team

OBP is part of the communities we work in, not just located in them. We are active members of the Airdrie Chamber of Commerce and the Airdrie Downtown Business Association. We show up at local events and sponsor local causes because a thriving community genuinely is good for mental health and yes, we see the irony in a psychology practice pointing that out.

For over six years, we have sponsored a World Vision child named Princess in the Philippines, because we believe wellbeing does not stop at our borders. We support the Moose Hide Campaign as an act of reparation and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. We contribute to CKUA Radio because music matters to how we all feel. Locally, we support Bert Church Girls Rugby, 100 Men Who Give a Damn, the Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie, Community Links, Know Where to Run, and others.

This community has supported us. We don't take that lightly.

So, Who Is Off the Beaten Path For?

We work with people of all ages: children, adolescents, adults, seniors, and couples. We support individuals navigating anxiety, trauma, grief, burnout, relationship challenges, life transitions, and more. We offer individual counselling, couples and marriage counselling, therapy intensives, psychoeducational assessments for children and youth, and walk and talk sessions.

If you are not sure whether OBP is the right fit for your specific situation, reach out. We are genuinely happy to help you figure that out, even if the answer turns out to be pointing you somewhere else. We would rather you find the right support than the wrong fit.

The Short Version

We believe in you. We believe in the capacity people have for growth when they feel genuinely seen and supported. We believe therapy works best when it follows your path, not a prescribed one. We believe in accountability, warmth, good music, and showing up for the communities that show up for us.

That's what Off the Beaten Path Psychology and Wellness is about, and we thought it was time to just say so out loud.
